Possibly allied to English soft, Old High German samfto, softly, Gothic samjan, please; and the root sam of samhradh. Stokes suggests connectino with Zend hâma, like, Church Slavonic samu$$u, ipse, Norse, sömr, samr, English same; or Greek $$Gc$$`meros, tame. Cf. sàimhe.
